The Beatle's Love (2007) versus Beatlemania (1980)

Besides 25 years and quite a few changes in technology, there is a lot that separates the Broadway play Beatlemania from Cirque du Soleil's LOVE at the Mirage Hotel.

Despite ending almost 25 years before LOVE began, I think they used technology much more to their advantage in Beatlemania. Using a see through screen, you first see the Fab Four in what appears to be a Television Set. In some cases the band played in front of and behind rear projection and front projected images.

Beatlemania also used a chronological format for presenting the sixties and the Beatles career. Much like the Blue and Red Albums issued by Capitol Records, they pulled equally from all seven years of their career.

LOVE on the other hand primarily focuses on Sergeant Peppers, Abbey Road and the White Album. They keep on moving forwards and backwards from 1967 to 1969 to fit the shows purposes. While Beatlemania used both music and images to create the confusion and hysteria of drugs, Cirque pulls a tarp over your head for 30 seconds (go figure).

While LOVE has its own strengths it makes no effort to represent the four Beatles (with the exception of a few seconds where they are shown as four shadows). Instead they used four school boys to represent the Beatles. Unless you know a lot about their personal histories, there is no way of knowing which one is John, Paul, George or Ringo.

The game that you've been looking for

To borrow a phrase from Star Wars (these aren't the droids you're looking for) I think I've found the game that most console owners have been looking for.

LEGO Star Wars II

What makes this game so great? Well for one its main focus is classic Star Wars. But the real reason is that unlike so many games its is pretty intuitive. You can play for hours without using cheat codes, buying a book, or looking for help online.

Not that any of those things wouldn't help. Its been my experience that most games will progress to a certain level then leave you in stump mode. I've also been happy that characters don't expire so easily.

So even though in the long run, I may break down to get some helpful advice, in the short run I have plenty of playing and exploring to do. Since the game runs on virtually all platforms, it make the perfect recommendation to your gaming friends.

The Wince Factor

After a year has past its time to look at the Star Wars series in a different light.

I decided to use the Wince Factor.

I will assign one positive and one negative to each of the six fims.

So starting with...

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Wince Factor: Jar Jar Binks

Cool Factor: Liam Neeson as Qui Gonn

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Wince Factor: Love Scenes

Cool Factor: Yoda Kicking Butt

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Wince Factor: Jedi Temple Slaughter

Cool Factor: Nods to Episode IV

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

Wince Factor: 1970's Hair Styles

Cool Factor: Luke Skywalker

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Wince Factor: Such a great movie but... Yoda as a puppet

Cool Factor: Too many to mention

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Wince Factor: Do you have to ask? Ewoks.

Cool Factor: Jabba The Hutt Rescue

While we can argue the merits of each of these films (and we all have our favorites) it is important to remember that they each have their merits as well as those moments that make us wince.

Sony PSP

Ok, I have to admit. I have a bad habit of buying things and sticking them in the closet.

Can you say GameCube, Playstation, XBOX or Sony PSP?
In all fairness I did crack open the XBOX pretty early on. It now serves as our secondary DVD player (don't ask).

The GameCube I was really impressed with once I had the time to try it out. This is the perfect present for the Future Gamers of America. But more on that later.

I always suspected that the Sony PSP was the darkhorse of modern electronics. Why? Because it actually serves more than one function. The iPOD has just come out with a digital player. Is this a bold attempt to save market share or a lame attempt to catch up with Sony?

If you had a device that could easily transfer pictures, play music, watch movies and play video games what would you call it? You could call it the Sony PSP (OK that was a trick question).

The screen is beautiful and much more vivid than looking through the back of your digital camera. So put your camera away and pull out the PSP when you want to share those pictures with family and friends.

Will it replace Sony PS2 or PS3 (or in all fairness XBOX 360)? That question kind of answers itself.

But if you are looking for the perfect travel companion, there is no other device that pleases on so many fronts. And before I forget its time to time open that box and see what else it might do.

Better than Pictures

I'd like to make the argument that digital music is better than pictures for remembering the past. Music can take you back to a certain place or time that even the best pictures can't.

Let's try the pro's and con's of pictures first. Up until recently a photograph was something that had to be developed at the drug store. In a roll of twelve or twenty four pictures, there were only two or three that you wanted to keep. Most of us would keep the envelopes and negatives. Ten years down the road your sock draw had more memories in the form of old photographs than you knew what to do with.

Digital music is a much more selective process. Much like digital photographs, you can pick and choose the items that you want to download and keep. Sure a few songs are like pictures of an old haircut, but most good songs are timeless especially if the recording had substance to begin with.

And unlike old photographs that you lug around from house to house and apartment to apartment, digital songs are housed on the internet. Waiting to bring back memories at the click of a button.

Star Wars: I - VI

The wait is over. Now that the series is complete we can rank the two trilogies from best to worst.

Starting with:

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Stole the show: Qui Gonn

Best Part: Rod Race

Ranking in the Series: 6

One word summary: Underwhelming

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Stole the show: Yoda

Best Part: Yoda Fight & Speeder Chase

Ranking in the series: 3

One word summary: Balanced

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Stole the show: Obi Wan Kenobi

Best Part: Opening and closing scenes

Ranking in the series: 5

One word summary: Overwhelming

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

Stole the show: Everyone in top form

Best Part: Too many to mention

Ranking in the Series: 1

One word summary: Best by virtue of being first

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Stole the show: Darth Vader

Best Part: Wampa and Cloud City

Ranking in the Series: 2

One word summary: Close second

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Stole the show: Jabba the Hutt

Best Part: Jabba's Palace/Rescuing Han

Worst Part: Do you have to ask? (Ewoks)

Ranking in the Series: 4

Of course because the rankings are subjective, they may change over time. Sometimes Empire may be higher or AOTC might be lower. Do classic performances outweigh modern digital technology? I say yes.

But at the end of the day Star Wars was a fun long ride for it's intended audience.
